Este texto tiene como objetivo fundamental proporcionar una formación básica en los aspectos estructurales, presentes en la mayoría de los sistemas. Pues, con independencia de la naturaleza del sistema, son estos aspectos estructurales los que más condicionan su comportamiento dinámico.(...) Este texto está concebido como bibliografía básica de la asignatura que con el mismo nombre, "Ingeniería de Sistemas", pueden elegir los estudiantes matriculados en el Grado de Ingeniería Informática de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática de la UNED. La asignatura se imparte en el segundo semestre del tercer curso y junto con las asignaturas de "Tratamiento Digital de Señales" y "Fundamentos de Control Automático" conforman la materia de señales y sistemas. Los conceptos sobre modelado y simulación que se adquieran en la asignatura serán de gran utilidad para afrontar la asignatura de "Modelado y Simulación" que se imparte en el primer semestre del cuarto curso.

El texto puede resultar de utilidad a estudiantes de Escuelas de Ingenierías o Facultades de Ciencias que tengan entre sus planes de estudio asignaturas relacionadas con los sistemas dinámicos. Pero además puede resultar interesante como bibliografía complementaria en asignaturas de Máster relacionadas con la Ecología, la Biotecnología y la Epidemología.

Los contenidos del texto se han estructurado en cinco temas y un apéndice. Todos los temas incorporan un número suficientes de ejemplos, de ejercicios y de preguntas de autoevaluación. Los ejemplos, totalmentes desarrollados, dirigen la atención del estudiante a problemas o aplicaciones concretas de la "Dinámica de Sistemas" y a su resolución con las técnicas que se le ha presentado previamente. Los ejercicios sin resolver tienen como objetivo que el estudiante ponga en práctica esas mismas técnicas. Casi todos los ejercicios están intercalados en las secciones, justo inmediatamente después de los aspectos que se desean poner en práctica, pues los autores piensan que de esta forma se favorece un aprendizaje más activo en el estudiante. Las preguntas de autoevaluación permitirán que el estudiante pueda evaluar el grado de asimilación de contenidos, se acompañan de una respuesta breve.
